Snowmobilers Donate $13,000 to Spina Bifida
in 2005-06; ISC Forms Due April 1

As celebrated at the 2006 Annual ISSA Convention in Waterloo in
November, Iowa snowmobilers once again opened up their wallets in
2005-06 for the Spina Bifida Association of Iowa (SBAI), the ISSA’s
official charity.
According to ISSA Charity Committee Co-Chairs Angie Sprung and
Kim Herman, $13,000 was raised last year for the SBAI, more than
doubling the total from a year ago. With activities planned for the
upcoming season, Sprung said she wants to keep the momentum going.
“You can send contributions to us or to your ISSA region director
or you can donate directly to a family. It counts either way,” Sprung
said. “The families do appreciate anything you can give them. Without
our help, these kids would not have received some of the things that they
have.”
During the Awards Banquet Saturday night, Sprung, Herman and
SBAI President Rod Tressel of Ankeny recognized the top charity
fundraisers for the ISSA. Taking home the honors in the club category
was the Saylorville Dam Snowmobile Club of Region 7 with $2,700 in
donations. The Eastern Iowa Sledheads of Region 12 came in second,
while Jason Klinkefus of Des Moines was recognized as the top
individual fundraiser at $1,100.
According to Tressel, the donations from snowmobilers help offset
the expenses to families for travel, hospital stays, equipment purchases
and educational opportunities associated with this spinal chord defect.
Helping to staff a booth at the ISSA Snow Show with his afflicted son
Andrew, Tressel said he appreciates the loyalty the ISSA has given their
organization.
“Thanksgiving is a time when our nation reflects on our blessings,
and it is really fitting that your annual convention takes place at this time
of year,” he said. “We are really excited that you have asked us here
again to share with you our successes and to solidify our relationship.
Andrew and I really enjoyed visiting with you today.”
Prior to convention, Sprung and Hermann announced a change in
the donation year for the ISSA. In a letter to clubs dated Nov. 9, they
reported they will collect contributions from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, instead
of the past practice of starting the new campaign at the first of the year.
The move is intended to facilitate bookkeeping.
“We feel this will make it much easier for us to get our reports
ready for convention,” Sprung and Herman explained. “We also would
ask that you please send us your donations as soon as possible after your
events so we can send the checks on to the SBAI. Remember, the ISSA’
s fundraising awards are based solely on the money raised for the SBAI.”
Accompanying the letter was a charity survey for the International
Snowmobile Council (ISC). Since the ISC’s fiscal year runs from April 1
to March 31, that form is due from Iowa clubs April 1. “Please
remember, the ISC survey includes any and all time spent and money
raised for any charity, not just Spina Bifida,” the committee chairs
explained.
