All bundled up and ready to ride, children from the Spina Bifida
Association of Iowa were treated to a day of snowmobiling on the Heart
of Iowa Nature Trail at Huxley Jan. 11.
Snowmobilers Raise nearly
$11,000 for Charity in 2009
Since 1987, the Spina Bifida Association of Iowa has served as
the official charity of the ISSA. Spina Bifida is a birth defect in
which the spinal chord of the fetus does not close properly during
pregnancy. The condition occurs in two of every 1,000
pregnancies. The loss of sensation from the nerves not developing
leads to muscle weakness in the lower part of the child’s body.
According to SBAI President Rod Tressel of Ankeny, the goal
of the SBAI is to provide support, services, optimism and
opportunities for those with or impacted by this birth defect. The
organization achieves those objectives by passing on the latest
medical information through regular communication with its
members and networking at various events.
“Those social events are really a time where we can do
networking with our families," Tressel said. "The kids who come
sometimes don’t realize that there are other kids out there with
spina bifida. And it’s a chance to be in a setting where somebody
else understands what they feel like."
Most of this SBAI's efforts are made possible by the support
of the ISSA, and for 2009, snowmobilers raised $10,966 for the
non-profit organization. In November at the ISSA Annual
Convention, Tressel recognized the Saylorville Dam Snowmobile
Club of Region 7 as the top fundraising club in the state.
"We really appreciate your support," Tressel told convention-
goers.
“Our donations were down a little bit from last year but up
some over other years, and with the economy the way it has been,
I think it has been really great, and I think everyone deserves a
round of applause,” said ISSA Charity Committee Co-Chair Angie
Sprung at convention.
Along with fellow co-chair Kim Herman, Sprung reminded
snowmobile clubs to turn in their
charity surveys by March 31 so
any additional donations can be noted at the
2010 ISC. While the
state charity season runs from convention to convention, reporting
at the international level is based on activities from April to March.
“It’s really important that we turn those surveys in,” Sprung
encouraged.
The survey was mailed to clubs earlier this year. It also
available online
here as an MS Word document. In addition to
donations to SBAI, the survey is also requesting numbers related to
other charitable activities at the club level.
