Four Recreational Safety Officers hired by the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources to ensure snowmobile registration compliance have
been making their presence felt out on the trails this winter.
Wherever there's been ridable snow in 2005, the officers have unloaded
their state-owned sleds and patrolled the trails, checking for current
snowmobile registrations and issuing warnings as needed.
“We’re out here to encourage recreational riding. We want to get people
to register their sleds, which helps pay for the groomers, so they can
have nice places to ride,” Officer Aron Arthur explained. “We’re out here
to keep this form of recreation going.”
The last weekend in January, trail conditions brought them to Howard
and Winneshiek counties in northeast Iowa. On Saturday, 130 machines
were checked, and on Sunday, another 25 or so snowmobilers were
stopped.
Investigating accidents as well, the officers have also been hired to
enforce all-terrain vehicle laws in Iowa, and thus far, they said
snowmobilers have had much fewer violations.
