American Trails is a non-profit organization encouraging both
motorized and non-motorized trail access. According to its website, “our
goal is to support America's trails by finding common ground and
promoting cooperation among all trail interests.”
Durby had been campaigning for a directorship since the 18th
National Trails Symposium in the Quad Cities last October. An interview
with the board followed, and in July, American Trails Executive Director
Pam Gluck notified him of the favorable election results.
“My approach with this board will be very tactful, and I expect to sit
and learn pretty much the first year,” Durby said. “They have a lot to
offer us, but at the same time, I feel we have a lot to offer them. I really
want to educate the board members on the need of establishing side-by-
side corridor trails.”
    Seventeen members sit on the
American Trails board, including Bob
Walker of Montana, former snowmobile program manager for the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources. Durby’s first official duty as a board
member will come later this year at a meeting in Redding, Calif. The 19th
National Trails Symposium will be held in Little Rock, Ark., Nov. 15-18,
2008.
Past ISSA President Terry Durby has been
unanimously voted in by the board of the
American Trails organization to serve as one of its
directors. The announcement came at the August
ISSA Board of Directors meeting.
“I am excited to have been selected for this
honor and am hoping I can make a difference on
this board,” Durby said. “I think this will be a big
step for snowmobilers across the country for
expanding multi-use trails.”
