
American Trails is a non-profit organization encouraging both motorized
and non-motorized trail access. According to its website, “our goal is to
support America's trails by finding common ground and promoting
cooperation among all trail interests.”
Durby had been campaigning for a directorship since the 18th National
Trails Symposium in the Quad Cities last October. An interview with the
board followed, and in July, American Trails Executive Director Pam
Gluck notified him of the favorable election results.
“My approach with this board will be very tactful, and I expect to sit and
learn pretty much the first year,” Durby said. “They have a lot to offer
us, but at the same time, I feel we have a lot to offer them. I really want
to educate the board members on the need of establishing side-by-side
corridor trails.”
Seventeen members sit on the American Trails board, including Bob
Walker of Montana, former snowmobile program manager for the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources. Durby’s first official duty as a board
member will come later this year at a meeting in Redding, Calif. The 19th
National Trails Symposium will be held in Little Rock, Ark., Nov. 15-18,
2008.
