Clubs Facing Bridge Work This Fall
The Review and Selection Committee of the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources (IDNR) reviewed 46 trail grant applications from snowmobile
clubs across Iowa for the 2008-09 snowmobile season. Of them, 15 clubs
requested funding for 94 temporary bridges and nine permanent bridges on
varying trail systems affected by June’s record flooding in Iowa.
The third weekend in September, award letters were mailed to clubs
regarding their grant requests. Many of the bridge replacement requests
were denied due to a lack of adequate funding, and clubs were instead
referred to the recycled lumber being made available to the ISSA through
the Iowa Waste Exchange.
"The review committee has recommended that we utilize the free lumber
that has been made available to the clubs through the ISSA," said David
Downing, snowmobile program manager for the IDNR. "However, we may
have more temporary bridge repairs than we have free lumber."
A total of $480,000 was requested through the state snowmobile program.
"The requests were significantly higher this year because of higher fuel
costs and bridge repairs related to high water this spring," explained ISSA
President Merv Hoermann. "For the clubs requesting funds for temporary
bridges, we have a source of pallets--very big and very heavy-- available to
use. The only cost to clubs will be picking the pallets up."
