Rep. Helen Miller (D-Fort Dodge) and over 50 co-sponsors introduced
an amendment April 2 to restore the funds to the Snowmobile and ATV
funds that were transferred in 2002. The co-sponsors include the
Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader and the Appropriations Chair.
It is filed as an amendment to the DNR Appropriations Bill.
"We need you to contact your legislator NOW in support of amendment
H-8367," said ISSA Lobbyist Mike Heller. "It is a long shot that the
amendment will pass both chambers, but it is the best opportunity that
we have had at getting the funds restored since 2002.  The message is
that we are asking them to restore the funds that were transferred in
2002."
The amendment requests restoration of $950,000 to the state
snowmobile program and $775,000 to the ATV program. According to
Heller, the money was earmarked from license revenue and was intended
to be used for trails to provide outdoor recreation opportunities for
snowmobilers.
"This is the best shot we have had yet at getting our funds back," said
Dave Carmichael of Tripoli, a charter member of the ISSA's Emergency
Funding and Legislation Committee created in the wake of the depletion
of snowmobile program reserves six years ago.
