Iowa's Durby Ends Two-Year Run as ACSA President;
ISSA Vows Support of National Access Challenges
by Cameron Hanson
Editor, Iowa Snowmobiler magazine
Past ISSA President Terry Durby ended his two-year run as president of the
American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) this past June following
elections at the 2013 International Snowmobile Congress in Green Bay.
Succeeded by Duane Sutton of South Dakota, Durby hopes he left the
position better than he found it and vows to continue his diligence on
snowmobile access issues across the country.
At the August ISSA board meeting, Durby brought everyone up to speed on the
legal challenges existing in Idaho, Oregon, Michigan and elsewhere and
explained how those wranglings ripple back to Iowa.
“Whether you think it impacts where you ride or not, it really doesn’t matter,”
Durby said. “It will trickle down to us. We don’t have any national forests in Iowa,
but there are national forests where we all like to ride out of state.”
According to Durby, ACSA currently needs approximately $40,000 to defend
snowmobile access in the court system. The organization has always relied on
its Legal Action Fund to finance its attorneys and is now looking to its member
associations to contribute more to the fund.
“It has never been more critical to support organized snowmobiling,” ACSA
pleads on its website at www.snowmobilers.org. “Become a Friend of ACSA and
help to keep public lands open!”
Last month, ACSA released its Honor Roll of contributions to the Legal Action
Fund. State snowmobile associations in Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin
and Washington each kicked in at least $3,000 and now  Iowa is looking to join
them.
At its August meeting, the ISSA board agreed to match any club or individual
donation made through the ISSA up to a total of $3,000 for the ACSA Legal Action
Fund. Durby challenged Iowa clubs to keep pace with South Dakota.
In addition to the $4,000 from the South Dakota Snowmobile Association,
more than 30 snowmobile clubs, businesses and individuals from South
Dakota donated more than $13,000 to the legal defense fund. Durby and others
like him have been inspired by their outpouring of support.
“South Dakota has half as many snowmobilers as we do,” he pointed out.
“These court challenges seem to be lining up against us right now. They will
affect Iowans’ ability to ride elsewhere. Those areas are all dependent on
continuing the fight, and that fight takes money.”
“The recent court ruling in Idaho threatens snowmobile trails in every national
forest,” ACSA reported. “This ruling will be very expensive to challenge, but ACSA
is committed to fight along with others for your access to public lands. Please
consider a donation to ACSA to help us out.”
